Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder can be hard to recognise; however, one of the signs can be responding in a more extreme manner than the situation warrants. Or the reverse, being unable to feel emotions or feeling “numb”. You may not have flashbacks, and you may logically know you are safe after a traumatic event, but your mood has changed, or your body holds the pain, and it is harder to feel happy or even safe.

Here are some behaviors that can present when you may be suffering from PTSD:

  • Problems with trust.
  • Avoidance.
  • Anxiety.
  • Depression.
  • Anger.
  • Reliving the event (flashbacks or nightmares)
  • Self-destructive or risky behaviours.
  • Withdrawal
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Overly reactive (jumpy or more emotions that are unwarranted).
We sometimes dismiss the severity of what we felt in any circumstance as we think we are out of danger and are “moving on”. But it all depends on what your brain made that situation mean. Our unconscious brain has an automatic response to protect itself, but although valid at the time, it may impair us now and in the future. These patterns in the brain can restrict us from functioning in daily life.

I remember when I had Ptsd after a car accident. I was unable to talk about the situation without tears and had not slept properly for years. No amount of talking about my situation changed my behaviours, but working with my unconscious quickly changed where I had been stuck for years and made life so much more livable and enjoyable.

If you are reading this, you have likely tried hard to change. However, what you have done so far has not changed in the way you need. This response is not a conscious choice but an automatic protective reaction and needs to be addressed where it began – in your unconscious. Join me to learn unravel what has been knotted up and approach it differently and discover how different you can feel and act.
