In essence, this behaviour is a fear of the future. It is something we all need, an essential survival skill, but it can go into overdrive and limit your life. If you find yourself rehearsing the same negative thoughts, it is time to take action. The most dangerous thing we can do is to hide it and do nothing. None of us consciously choose to let it take hold. Like most behaviours, it endeavours to support you but becomes toxic in its overuse.

It is easy to run self-sabotaging thoughts repeatedly or to repeat traumatic scenes over and over in our heads, creating paralysis or dysfunction. Just like how a constant small trickle of water can leave a rut, so can our thoughts. The more you think a certain way, the stronger it gets. The deeper the grove the more likely you are to think that thought again

 

When anxiety overwhelms you, it is essential to keep in mind that, similar to the initial experiences of learning to drive in a car, the feeling of being overwhelmed is common. However, with time, this overwhelming sensation tends to diminish, and the process becomes more manageable.
